นักปล้ำหนำเลี้ยบ "ราชวิทย์" ภ.ป.ร.ราชวิทยาลัยฯ ไล่ทำคะแนน บี้เอาชนะ วชิราวุธ ย้ำแค้นได้สำเร็จ 8-5 จุด รักบี้ฟุตบอลประเพณี ราชวิทย์-วชิราวุธ ครั้งที่ 18 พร้อมครองถ้วยพระราชทานพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวฯ ประจำปี 2550 และเป็นแชมป์สมัยที่ 11 อีกด้วย
การแข่งขันรักบี้ฟุตบอลประเพณี ราชวิทย์-วชิราวุธ ครั้งที่ 18 ชิงถ้วยพระราชทานพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวฯ ประจำปี 2550 เมื่อวันศุกร์ที่ 21 ธ.ค. 50 ที่ผ่านมา ที่สนามกีฬากองทัพบก เป็นการแข่งขัน ระหว่าง 2 ทีมมหามิตรตลอดกาล ภ.ป.ร.ราชวิทยาลัยฯ พบกับ วชิราวุธวิทยาลัย โดยเกมของคู่นี้ถือว่าเป็นคู่ปิดฤดูกาลส่งท้ายปีที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดในเมืองไทย เพราะทั้งสองทีมล้วนแต่มีนักรักบี้ฟุตบอลระดับแนวหน้าของประเทศอยู่เป็นจำนวนมาก โดยปีที่แล้วผลจบที่ ราชวิทย์ เฉือนชนะ วชิราวุธ คว้าแชมป์ไปครองแบบเฉียดฉิว 11-10 จุด
เริ่มเกมมาช่วง 15 นาทีแรกทั้ง 2 ทีม ผลัดกันรุกผลัดกันรับโดยตลอด แต่ยังไม่มีทีมไหนทำแต้มขึ้นนำได้ จนนาที 17 ภาวัช จารุนภัทร วิ่งพาลูกฝ่าแนวรับ วชิราวุธ 4 คน ตรงริมเส้นฝั่งซ้ายเข้าไปวางทรัยแรกของเกมให้ ราชวิทย์ ขึ้นนำก่อน 5-0 จุด แต่น่าเสียดายที่ อาจอง ประเสริฐยิ่ง เตะเปลี่ยนระยะ 22 เมตร ไม่เข้า ภ.ป.ร.ราชวิทยาลัยฯ จึงนำอยู่แค่ 5-0 จุด จากนั้นเกมยังคงดำเนินไปอย่างคู่คี่สูสี แต่ไม่มีทีมใดทำคะแนนเพิ่มได้ หมดครึ่งแรก ราชวิทย์ นำ วชิราวุธ อยู่ 5-0 จุด
ครึ่งหลัง ภ.ป.ร.ราชวิทยาลัยฯ ยังเปิดเกมรุกเข้าใส่ วชิราวุธ อย่างหนัก นาที 42 ชาตรี ภาคสุนทร เตะลูกดร็อปคิก ระยะไกลกว่า 35 เมตร ตรงกลางสนามลอยเข้าประตูไปอย่างสวยงามให้ ราชวิทย์ ทำคะแนนห่าง วชิราวุธ ออกไปอีกเป็น 8-0 จุด พอเสียคะแนนนี้ไป วชิราวุธ เปิดเกมรุกเข้าใส่ ราชวิทย์ อย่างหนัก จนมาประสบความสำเร็จในนาที 51 เมื่อ ชินพงศ์ โสภณมณี หลุดเข้าไปวางทรัยให้ วชิราวุธ ทำคะแนนตีตื้นขึ้นมาได้สำเร็จ จากจังหวะสกัมตรงเส้น 10 เมตรของ ราชวิทย์ แต่ เชษฐพล พรหมธารี เตะเปลี่ยนระยะ 25 เมตร ไม่เข้า ทำให้ วชิราวุธ ทำแต้มไล่ขึ้นมาที่ 5-8 จุด
เกมสนุก และตื่นเต้น ทั้งสองทีมต่างผลัดกันเปิดเกมรุกเข้าใส่กัน เกมเริ่มเดือด เพราะผู้เล่นทั้งสองทีมเริ่มมีจังหวะปะทะกันมากขึ้น และนาที 68 พงษ์นที เงินทอง ของ ราชวิทย์ โดนใบแดงไล่ออกจากสนาม หลังจากเจตนาเข้าไปแท็กเกิ้ลใส่ผู้เล่น วชิราวุธ ในจังหวะที่ไม่มีลูกเพราะผู้เล่น วชิราวุธเตะลูกโยนยาวไปข้างหน้าแล้ว แต่ ราชวิทย์ ยังเปิดเกมรุกเข้าใส่ วชิราวุธ เหมือนเดิม ทั้งที่ ราชวิทย์ เหลือผู้เล่นในสนามอยู่แค่ 14 คน ด้าน วชิราวุธ ก็พยายามเปิดเกมรุกเข้าใส่ ราชวิทย์ อย่างหนัก เพื่อทำคะแนนตีเสมอและขึ้นนำให้ได้ เนื่องจากได้เปรียบเรื่องตัวผู้เล่นมากกว่า 1 คน
ช่วงเวลาที่เหลือ แม้ วชิราวุธ จะบุกเข้าใส่ ราชวิทย์ อย่างหนัก แต่ยังไม่เด็ดขาดพอ ไม่สามารถทำคะแนนเพิ่มได้ หมดเวลา ภ.ป.ร.ราชวิทยาลัยฯ เอาชนะ วชิราวุธวิทยาลัย ย้ำแค้นได้สำเร็จอีกครั้ง 8-5 จุด คว้าแชมป์รักบี้ฟุตบอลประเพณี ราชวิทย์-วชิราวุธ ครั้งที่ 18 ซิวถ้วยพระราชทานพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวฯ ไปครองอีกปี และยังเป็นแชมป์ สมัยที่ 11 ของ ราชวิทย์ อีกด้วย

Teams and pools announced for 2008 NZI Sevens

New Zealand have drawn a tough pool despite being the top seeds for the NZI Sevens in Wellington on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 February.New Zealand enter the tournament having stolen a march on their rivals by winning the opening two rounds in Dubai and George, South Africa. They head to Wellington for the event on February 1-2 eight points clear of their nearest rivals, Fiji, and preparing to face Samoa, Canada and Papua New Guinea in a physical pool A. Samoa won the Wellington tournament this year. Second seeds Fiji, runnersup to New Zealand in both Dubai and George, top pool B where they will face a young England side, who could have sevens specialist Simon Amor returning, the Cook Islands and South Africa bowl winners Wales. South Africa head into the event third in the standings after reaching the semifinals at both opening tournaments and top pool C, where they will face France and Australia. However, the major threat in the pool could come from a resurgent Kenya, who beat England on their way to the cup quarterfinals in George. Pool D is headed by Argentina, who are just four points behind South Africa in the overall standings. They face Scotland, the physical Tongans and the United States in pool D. Pool A: New Zealand, Samoa, Canada, Papua New Guinea. Pool B: Fiji, England, Wales, Cook Islands. Pool C: South Africa, Kenya, Australia, France. Pool D: Argentina, Scotland, United States, Tonga.

Mr Walters believes that New Zealand’s stiffest opposition will come from Fiji and South Africa, although Samoa will also be hungry to defend the title they won in Wellington in 2007.Wellington is the third leg of the 2007/08 IRB Rugby Sevens World Series.

Thais outpaced Singapore to victory.

Thailand gave Singaporeans a rugby lesson as the Thais whooped Singapore 26-3 in a fiesty affair. There were moments of tension between the two nation though I have to say that the Singapore side have an advantage over size. However, that didn’t stop the Thais from dominating the game with their excellence pace and they were tactically superior than the Singaporeans. Everytime Singapore attacked, the Thais were up to the task and their defence was difficult to penetrate.

By half time, the Thais only had a minor lead of 8-3 courtesy of a try from Kantachai Chayapirom and a penalty kick by Thai No.10 Attavut Thanakat. But it was the Lions that had the lead from a penalty kick in the 2nd minute through Singapore No.7 Daryl Tay Siow Siang.
The second half was entertaining as both teams were desperate to score tries. Singapore put up a brave fight but the Thais kept on counter attacking and they managed to find gaps through Singapore defence and scored three more tries through Suphawit Muongmee to put the game beyond reach. The Thais were also clynical from the penalty as Attavut Thanakit converted a few penalty kicks to increase their lead. Singapore had their moments but they kept slipping away. Both teams went into this match with one loss each from their opening matches. Final score: Singapore 3 Thailand 26.

Hong Kong struggle to beat Sri Lanka

Hong Kong beat Sri Lanka in another aggressive match as the Hong Kong boys beat Sri Lanka 6-0 from two penalty kicks. It was end to end action and it was the Sri Lankans that put up a great fight till the end. Hong Kong are favourites to lift the ARFU Junior Cup but last night’s game suggested that they are beatable. Sri Lankans were at a disadvantage especially in the second half due to two of their players being yellow carded (meaning that they will have to sit out of the match for a period of time). Final score: Hong Kong 6 Sri Lanka 0

Sri Lanka steals victory with late comeback against Thailand in the ARFU Junior Cup, fielding six nations. Sri Lankan scored two late tries as they came back from 6-0 deficit. Thailand had the upper hand in the first half with two penalties courtesy of Klin Lakasanasompong of Thailand. However, the momentum shifted towards Sri Lanka as they kept pushing for the try. Their efforts paid off after near-cut chances as Bilal Hassen scored a crucial tie to make it 5-6 before Harsa Weerakkooi converted in what was the turning point of the match to give the Sri Lankans 7-6 lead. Before time ran off, Gayan Weerarathe scored a late try to put the game beyond doubt for a 12-6 victory.

การแข่งขันรักบี้ 7 คน นานาชาติ หาดใหญ่

พ.ศ. 2518 อาจารย์ โฉลก โกมารกุล ณ นคร นายกสมาคมรักบี้ฟุตบอลแห่งประเทศไทย ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ ในสมัยนั้น มีนโยบายที่จะส่งเสริมกีฬารักบี้ฟุตบอลไปสู่ส่วนภูมิภาค เพื่อให้มีการเล่นกีฬารักบี้ฟุตบอลอย่างแพร่หลายทั่วประเทศ จึงริเริ่มที่จะจัดการแข่งขันรักบี้ฟุตบอลในส่วน ภูมิภาคขึ้น จึงได้ปรึกษากับ คุณเคร่ง สุวรรณวงศ์ นายกเทศมนตรีนครหาดใหญ่ โดยในปีแรกจะจัดการแข่งขันรักบี้ 15 คน ประเภทเยาวชนก่อน และได้จัดขึ้นที่อำเภอหาดใหญ่ จังหวัดสงขลา ต่อมา พ.ศ. 2519 อาจารย์โฉลก โกมารกุล ณ นคร ได้ไปดูวิธีการจัดการแข่งขันรักบี้ 7 คน ที่ประเทศฮ่องกง และได้นำกลับมาปรึกษาหารือกับกรรมสัมปาทิกในสมัยนั้นว่าควรจัดการแข่งขันรักบี้ 7 คน เช่นเดียวกับประเทศฮ่องกง โดยเชิญประเทศเพื่อนบ้าน เช่น มาเลเซีย สิงคโปร์ มาร่วมด้วยในระดับสโมสร กรรมสัมปาทิกสภาเห็นด้วยในความคิดนี้ จึงมอบให้ คุณมัทนะ หลานสะอาด อดีตอุปนายกกิตติมศักดิ์ สมาคมรักบี้ฟุตบอลแห่งประเทศไทย ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ ซึ่งเป็นผู้อำนวยการธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทย สาขาภาคใต้ อยู่ในขณะนั้นนำเรื่องไปปรึกษาหารือกับ คุณเคร่ง สุวรรณวงศ์ และก็เห็นดีด้วยที่จะจัดการแข่งขันรักบี้ 10 คน นานาชาติ ขึ้นที่หาดใหญ่ โดยกำหนดให้จัดการแข่งขันช่วงต้นเดือน

รักบี้คิงส์คัพ

สมาคมรักบี้ฟุตบอลแห่งประเทศไทย ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ 2481 (พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้า ฯ ให้รับไว้ในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ เมื่อวันที่ 16 พฤษภาคม 2493) โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อส่งเสริมและพัฒนาการเล่นกีฬารักบี้ฟุตบอลในประเทศไทย ให้แพร่หลายและมีมาตรฐานทัดเทียมนานาชาติ การดำเนินกิจกรรมของสมาคม ฯ และพัฒนาการของกีฬารักบี้ฟุตบอลมีความเจริญก้าวหน้ามาเป็นลำดับ ปัจจุบัน การเล่นรักบี้ฟุตบอลมีรูปแบบการเล่นหลายแบบ ซึ่งมีจำนวนผู้เล่นในทีมแตกต่างกันไป เช่น 15 คน, 10 คน และ 7 คน เป็นต้นรักบี้ฟุตบอล 7 คน (Rugby Sevens) เป็นการเล่นรักบี้ฟุตบอลที่รวดเร็วใช้ผู้เล่นไม่มาก ผู้ชมสามารถเข้าใจได้ง่าย และเกมส์มีความตื่นเต้นสนุกสนาน จึงได้รับความนิยมกันอย่างกว้างขวางทั่วโลก สมาคมรักบี้ฟุตบอลแห่งประเทศไทย ฯ ได้จัดให้มีการแข่งรักบี้ 7 คน ขึ้นครั้งแรกที่อำเภอหาดใหญ่ จังหวัดสงขลา เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2519 และจัดเป็นประจำทุกปีจนถึงปัจจุบัน นอกจากนี้ ยังได้จัดการแข่งขันที่จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ในช่วงปี พ.ศ. 2535 - 2540 อีกด้วยผลของการส่งเสริมดังกล่าว ทำให้ทีมรักบี้ 7 คน ของประเทศไทยประสบความสำเร็จอย่างงดงาม โดยได้รับรางวัลชนะเลิศอันดับ 3 ในการแข่งขันกีฬาเอเชียนเกมส์ ครั้งที่ 13 ณ กรุงเทพมหานคร เมื่อเดือนธันวาคม 2541

รักบี้กาชาด

การแข่งขันรักบี้การกุศลเก็บเงินรายได้สมทบทุนกาชาดนี้เริ่มต้นปีพุทธศักราช 2501 เป็นการแข่งขันชิงถ้วยพระราชทานของสมเด็จพระบรมราชินีนาถ องค์สภานายิกาสภากาชาดไทย และใน ปีพุทธศักราช 2502 มีการแข่งขันเหมือนกัน แต่เป็นการเก็บรายได้บำรุงมูลนิธิคนพิการ ซึ่งมีวัตถุประสงค์เช่นเดียวกัน การแข่งขันรักบี้การกุศลระหว่างชุดทหารผสมและพลเรือนที่ผ่าน ๆ มานี้ ไม่สู้จะสม่ำเสมอบางปีก็จัดให้แก่กาชาด และบางปีก็จัดให้คนพิการ เจตนารมณ์ของสภากาชาดนั้นปรารถนาจะให้การแข่งขันระหว่างทั้งสองชุดนี้เป็นประเพณีสืบต่อไป สำหรับการแข่งขันรักบี้ฟุตบอลประเพณี ทหารรวม – พลเรือนรวม เพื่อหารายได้บำรุงสภากาชาดไทย ได้เริ่มจัดการแข่งขันมาตั้งแต่ปี พุทธศักราช 2508 โดยการแข่งขันได้จัดขึ้นเป็นประจำทุกปี นอกจากจัดการแข่งขันเพื่อหารายได้บำรุงสภากาชาดไทยแล้ว ยังสร้างความสมัครสมานสามัคคีระหว่างนักรักบี้ฟุตบอลทั้งสองฝ่าย ที่ได้ทำกิจกรรมการกุศลร่วมกัน นอกจากนั้น นักรักบี้ฟุตบอลที่ได้ลงเล่นรักบี้กาชาดติดต่อกันเกิน 3 ครั้ง จะได้รับเหรียญกาชาดสมนาคุณชั้น 3 อีกด้วย การแข่งขันได้จัดติดต่อกันมาร่วม 20 ปี ผลัดกันแพ้ผลัดกันชนะ จนเรียกเป็นรักบี้ประเพณีกาชาดไทย

ประวัติรักบี้ฟุตบอล “ชิงถ้วยวชิราลงกรณ์”

เริ่มแข่งขันครั้งแรกเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2498 (ค.ศ. 1955) พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ทรงพระราชทานถ้วยรางวัล “วชิราลงกรณ์” (ให้ชื่อถ้วยตามพระนามของสมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกยาเธอเจ้าฟ้า วชิราลงกรณ์) เพื่อใช้ในการแข่งขันรักบี้ฟุตบอลระหว่างทีมชาติไทยและทีมสหพันธรัฐมาลายา โดยเริ่มการแข่งขันที่กรุงเทพฯ ก่อนเมื่อปี พ.ศ.2498 และต่อไปก็เล่นที่มาลายาสลับกันไปโดยตกลงกันว่าทุก ๆ ปีจะต้องมีการแข่งขัน ในการแข่งขันครั้งนี้ทีมมาลายาสามารถเอาชนะทีมไทยได้ถ้วยไปครองเป็นครั้งแรก และต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2499 (ค.ศ. 1956) ทีมไทยได้ลงไปแข่งขันที่สิงค์โปร และได้ชัยชนะนำถ้วยกลับคืนมายังประเทศไทย แต่เนื่องจากการแข่งขันชิงถ้วยต้องเปลืองค่าใช้จ่ายทั้งสองฝ่ายอันมาก มาลายาจึงขอเสนอว่าให้มีการจัดการแข่งขัน 2 ปีต่อครั้ง เริ่มจัดในปี 2501 ที่กรุงเทพฯ และผลัดเปลี่ยนกันไปทุก ๆ 2 ปี

รักบี้ฟุตบอลนั้นมีต้นกำเนิดที่แน่ชัดไม่ได้ แต่ที่จุดเริ่มต้นให้มีการเล่นตามรูปแบบที่เป็นอยู่ในปัจจุบัน ก็มาจากโรงเรียนรักบี้ จากโรงเรียนนี้เกมได้แพร่หลายและมาไกลจนถึงเมืองไทย สำหรับรักบี้ในเมืองไทย นั้น เริ่มต้นด้วยชาวยุโรปโดยเฉพาะชาวอังกฤษที่เข้ามาทำการค้าหรือเข้ามาเป็นครูในโรงเรียนของรัฐ ได้นำรักบี้เข้ามาเล่น โดยใช้สถานที่เล่นคือทุ่งพระสุเมรุ (ท้องสนามหลวงปัจจุบัน) ต่อมาปี 2444พระพุทธเจ้าหลวงได้ให้ใช้ที่ดินว่างเปล่าที่ทุ่งสระปทุมวันเป็นที่เล่นกีฬาของชาวต่างชาติที่อยู่ในเมืองไทย โดยใช้ชื่อว่า “ราชกรีฑาสโมสร” เกิดเป็นสโมสรกีฬาหลายชนิด มาถึงปี 2452 มีการเล่นรักบี้อย่างจริงจังทุกวันเสาร์ โดยขั้นแรกเป็นการเล่นกันเองระหว่างต่างชาติล้วน ๆ หลังจากนั้นคนไทยที่ไปศึกษายังประเทศอังกฤษ และเล่นรักบี้ที่นั่น เมื่อกลับมาเมืองไทย ได้เข้าร่วมเล่นเรื่อยมา ครั้นต่อมาเมื่อมีจำนวนคนไทยและที่ไม่ใช่คนอังกฤษล้วนมากขึ้น ได้รวมตัวกันตั้งเป็นทีมแข่งขันกันเอง 3 ทีม คืออังกฤษ สก๊อตแลนด์ และทีมรวมจากหลาย ๆ ชาติรวมทั้งคนไทย ชิงถ้วย HAMSAIRS
ต่อมาช่วงปี 2472 พระสุทัศน์พงศ์พิสุทธิ์ (ม.ล.กิ่ง สุทัศน์) นักเรียนเก่าอังกฤษ ซึ่งโปรดปรานเกมรักบี้มากที่สุด มารับราชการที่กรมไปรษณีย์โทรเลขก็รวบรวมข้าราชการหัดให้เล่นรักบี้ อาทิเช่น อาจารย์เจือ จักษุรักษ์ นายไชย เตชะเสน นายสกนธ์ ศาสตราภัย ฝึกหัดเล่นและได้ไปฝึกซ้อมที่โรงเรียนวชิราวุธวิทยาลัย โดยเกณฑ์เด็กนักเรียนรุ่นโตเข้าร่วมฝึกหัดเล่นด้วยกัน

โดยคู่ชิงชนะเลิศเป็นการการรีแมตช์ระหว่าง ทีมชาติไทย ที่มี ขุนศึก จันทรนคร, ภควัต มาไพศาลสิน, พงศ์ระพี นรรัตน์ และ กรพงศ์ วงษาลังการ พบกับ ออสเตรเลีย หลังจากเคยพบกันมาแล้วในรอบแรก โดย ไทย แพ้ ออสเตรเลีย ไป 24-34 จุด

Tahu to play at outside centre

The much raved-about Waratahs recruit Timana Tahu looks firmly set to start his first season of Rugby Union at outside centre. Tahu joined the Waratahs after spending three successful seasons with National Rugby League (NRL) outfit the Parramatta Eels. He announced in March that he would switch codes when his NRL contract expired this year. Although there has been considerable hype surrounding his joining the Super 14 tournament, there has also been some uncertainty about which position would best suit him. "I talked over where I would play with Ewen (McKenzie) and the coaching staff and we decided I would be better off at outside centre rather than inside," Tahu told the Illawarra Mercury on Monday. "I have watched a few tapes and I thought it would better suit my game," added the 27-year-old midfielder. After playing some Rugby Union at Wollongong University last week, the League star admitted that he was still finding his feet in the more structured form of the game. "There are a few things to learn but having Lote [Tuqiri] there is really helpful and the other guys are making things easier to pick up," said Tahu. Tuqiri joined the Waratahs in 2003 after playing Rugby League for the Brisbane Bronco's and Queensland and has adapted very well ever since. Tahu feels that he will also adapt soon. "It's different from the NRL in many ways but it's still football," said the former Rugby League star. "I have played in representative teams with different coaches and different structures and have had to pick things up quickly," said the confident Waratahs player. Tahu added that it was just a matter of time before all the new things he had learned became second nature. One aspect of the game he might need to get used to, however, is receiving a lot less ball than he would in Rugby League. "I'm used to following the ball a bit but in rugby it's more important for me to get back out wide and wait for the ball to come to me. "All the boys have been great at training saying things might sound complicated at training but once you get out on the field it will be just like the NRL. Play it as you see it," said Tahu. The warm-up match against the Reds at Campbelltown, Adelaide on January 26 will be the true test for Waratahs centre.

Deans in for bumpy ride

Former Wallaby coach Eddie Jones said on Sunday that the shortage of talent in certain positions would certainly make Robbie Deans' tenure at the helm of Australian rugby very difficult. Jones, who initially had reservations about the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) appointing Deans as the new Wallaby coach, does not for one moment doubt the New Zealander's capabilities. "Robbie is an excellent coach, there's no doubt about it. He has been one of the best at provincial level and I think he'll do an outstanding job," Jones told the Sunday Independent. However, Jones feels the current state of the Australian game could present a considerable challenge for Deans. "It's going to be difficult for him [Deans]. We [Australia] lack talent in certain positions and the sporting landscape has changed in Australia. "We were more professional than most countries when professionalism came into rugby union in 1995 because sport is so important in Australia. "That meant we had a head-start on others because we had learned from other sports. "But now the sporting landscape in Australia is so cluttered. The fight for young talent is unbelievable, more so than in any other country in the world. "Young kids of 15 and 16 are being offered three-year contracts by Rugby League clubs. "Also it's become too easy to become a professional union player. There is not that real hunger we used to have."

Wasps let Clermont off the hook

London Wasps beat Clermont 25-24 in an epic Heineken Cup match at Adams Park on Saturday to keep their tournament hopes alive. On the evidence of the first-half it seemed as if the hosts would run away with it, racing into a 22-0 lead, but then back came Clermont with some stunning rugby. Three first-half tries set Wasps up to go hunting a try bonus point in the second half, but it was the French side who went hunting tries. And how they did it, Aur้lien Rougerie and Vilimoni Delasau scoring stunning length of the field tries before Emmanuel Etien secured a losing bonus point with the last play of the game. Wasps will be kicking themselves, firstly for not securing the four-try bonus point and then for letting Clermont sneak a late bonus point. It was a classic contest that started with typical Wasps dynamism as running duo Josh Lewsey and James Haskell immediately pumped through tackles. But judging from the opening five minutes the Adams Park crowd got the sense that this was an away Clermont side in a very different mindset to the one that struggled out in Munster. However that didn't faze the Heineken Cup holders, who struck first when Dallaglio wrestled Mignoni's clutches off the ball five metres out. Irish scrum-half Reddan was alive to the bouncing ball and cleverly dribbled over for the opening try on six minutes. Serema๏a Bai's running ability then scuppered a moment of brilliance from Cipriani, as the number ten scorched around Rougerie before sliding a kick inside for the supporting Sackey. But the England winger failed to collect the bobbling ball as chances continued to present themselves. Yet more swiftly recycled ball brought about Wasps' second score on 15 minutes as Clermont struggled to catch their breath. The lead was then stretched to fifteen thanks to a simple Cipriani penalty following an offside before the youngster raced Bai for the line with neither grounding the ball. Wasps seemed to be spurred on and once again Haskell linked with his backs to spark a charge out from his own 22. And within seconds Cipriani had backed himself up to halfway before an exchange with Waters led to Sackey going over for the score of the game. However, it was Clermont who struck first in the second period when Cipriani's cross-field kick found Rougerie who raced away from 80 metres. That sparked an enthralling game to move up another gear as space began to open up for the French heavyweights. The onslaught continued on the hour as Clermont set up camp on the hosts' line. But Wasps managed to weather the storm until tempers began to boil over between the players and, shockingly, a crowd member. Jamie Cudmore was sent to the bin but questions will be asked as to why he was not red-carded. The number six unloaded with a tirade of punches on a helpless Wasps player. If that was inexcusable, the actions from one member of the crowd were totally unacceptable, and have cast a shadow over the sport. With the fight spilling over onto the touchline a madman threw a flapping hand towards the head of James Haskell. When the action got underway again there came a moment of brilliance from substitute Vilimoni Delasau. The Fijian, from a standing start five metres from his own line, outpaced two Wasps defenders, notably Sackey being one of them, to set up a captivating finish with a length of the field try. But Wasps were not to make the same mistake twice in the same week as they declined their own try-scoring bonus point to seal the win, believing they had denied Clermont anything in an enthralling pool. However, substitute Etien crashed over on the final whistle after a barrage of sustained Clermont pressure to claim what could be a vital losing bonuspoint.

Brawling RFU official gets the boot

A Rugby Football Union (RFU) employee was ejected from Adams Park, High Wycombe, on Saturday following his disgraceful behaviour, when he lashed out at a player during London Wasps' 25-24 Heineken Cup victory over Clermont Auvergne. Former Wasps captain Alan Black aimed a blow at Clermont's Argentinian prop Martin Scelzo, when a fight which erupted in the 58th minute spilt onto the sidelines. Black, who is employed as a leisure rugby manager by the RFU, was thrown out of Adams Park and Wasps chief executive Tony Copsey promised a full investigation into the incident. "An individual was identified and expelled from the ground immediately," Copsey said after the match on Saturday. "It was an unfortunate incident because something of this nature has never happened before. "It's an unfortunate moment for rugby that an incident like this should happen during a fantastic match, possibly one of the best ever Heineken Cup games. "The club will consider its position and will fully investigate what happened tonight. "We won't over-react to the situation but want to look at it in its fullness. A season or lifetime ban might be forthcoming." A spokesman for Heineken Cup organisers European Rugby Cup confirmed they are to investigate the second-half incident. "ERC will contact Wasps on Monday for a full report. Roger O'Connor is the officer in charge and he will take up the matter with the club," the spokesman said.

Tigers` hopes left hanging

Leicester's hopes of a Heineken Cup quarter-final berth are now slim indeed, after the Tigers suffered a 22-11 reverse to Toulouse in France on Sunday. It looked for a while as though Leicester might have done enough to weather the initial Toulouse storm, and a good spell of possession heralded a possible upset for the visitors. But Vincent Clerc popped up to finish off a sweeping backs move just after the hour to send Toulouse 19-11 in the lead, and from then on the French found some reserves of energy to close the game out. The game never quite got the intensity of last week's in Leicester, but then it was the less intense team that held control for most of it. Toulouse edged the Tigers on well-executed set pieces, on the penalty count, on the clean breaks count, and finally on the try count. The gain-line hammering worked for the Tigers in the mud, but on a damp and still day on a firmer surface, Toulouse's artistry held sway. Toulouse fly-half Valentin Courrent opened the scoring with a beautifully struck dropped goal, but was wide with a second attempt as the home side dominated the early exchanges. They really ought to have had more than just the three points - when Courrent struck his second attempt it was after several phases of play by the Leicester line which had sucked Leicester's backs in, leaving space out wide. Early kicks at goal are chances to be taken, but the new passion for dropping goals just to rack up points is starting to become a bit of a bore. It costs teams if they miss too - Argentina's World Cup nearly came undone because of it. It nearly cost Toulouse. As they did at Welford Road a week ago, the Tigers soaked up the early pressure and scored against the run of play. Two inside pops from Andy Goode - a feature of Leicester's attacking tactics - sent Martin Corry and then Jordan Crane into the Toulouse 22. When the ball came back, Goode sent it through the hands for winger Tom Varndell to score in the corner. The French hit straight back, their star-studded backline producing a series of passes that only Toulouse can pull off. C้dric Heymans joined the line as the extra man, leaving Ollie Smith stranded with too many men to tackle, and full-back Cl้ment Poitrenaud ghosted in out wide to get the crowd back on side. Jean-Baptiste Elissalde matched his half-back partner with another dropped goal after a desperate Lewis Moody tackle had denied Yannick Jauzion on a fine break, but the three points were immediately cancelled out by Andy Goode as the French side infringed in front of their posts. Elissalde banged over a late penalty goal to give the home side a 14-8 lead at the break. Leicester started the second half with real relish and after 43 minutes Goode reduced the deficit to just three by kicking his second penalty after Floran Fritz's dangerous bodycheck was spotted by Irish official Alan Lewis. The three-time champions were instantly back on the attack and were only denied their second try by television match official John Sheehan. A grubber from Elissalde popped up awkwardly for Seru Rabeni, and Clerc sprang. Rabeni was deemed to have got there first, but there wasn't much in it. Leicester soaked up the pressure and as the match hit the hour mark, the Guinness Premiership outfit began to take a grip on the contest as the French crowd became restless. But in typical fashion, Toulouse bounced back and Clerc equalled Michel Marfaing's club record of 24 tries in the Heineken Cup in the right-hand corner. After an initial burst by Jauzion on the left flank, Toulouse spread the ball wide to Poitrenaud and he supplied Clerc who fended off the Tigers' trio of Rabeni, Geordan Murphy and Corry to score. Elissalde put the game out of Leicester's reach with a penalty with 10 minutes remaining as Leicester prop Marcos Ayerza collapsed a scrum, and as the freezing fog descended, the ball began to slip away from the desperate Leicester hands more and more. As, you feel, did the Tigers' chances of making the last eight.

The Asian Trophy kicked off on Sunday with Chinese Taipei and India recording opening victories.

Chinese Taipei 10-6 Arabian GulfFancied Chinese Taipei found the going tough against a hard-working Arabian Gulf side but ultimately ran out narrow winners.Tries by Chiu Wei and Tsai Hsiang gave Chinese Taipei a 10-3 half time lead but in the second half the Gulf team retained more possession through their bigger ball carriers and in a pulsating final ten minutes pressured the Chinese Taipei line to no avail.

Brunei 0-22 IndiaHost Union Brunei showed inspirational commitment and intensity in the second match of the day. Cheered on by a boisterous crowd, the players responded with several try-saving tackles and some strong running, however the Indian side's greater team work and strong forward pack proved the difference.Although they were unable to finish off several of their opportunities, tries by second row Vahan Tevorsyman and flanker Rohaan Kersi Setaana sealed the match in the second half.

Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens 2008 Public Ticket Sale - 5,000 Tickets Sold to Public at Today's Sale

The Hong Kong Rugby Football Union successfully held its official Public Ticket Sale for the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens 2008 today at the Hong Kong Stadium. All 5,000 event tickets were sold by 3:00pm. As expected, public demand for tickets was high with several hundred people queuing overnight and early this morning. By 7:00am more than 2,500 ticket buyers had already joined the queue. Upon the advice of the Hong Kong Police and Hong Kong Stadium management, the Stadium gates were opened to the queue members at 7:30am. Ticket sales began at the official starting time of 11:00am and were completely sold out in four hours. Mr Allan Payne, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union, commented on today’s public sale saying, “It was a great turn-out today and as ever we are most thankful for the support from the general public and our rugby community. We understand that some people will be disappointed not to get their tickets but this is the unavoidable, but unfortunate, outcome of the popularity of the Hong Kong Sevens. The ticket sale ran very smoothly and we want to thank the local public for their patience and good humour.”The Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens 2008 will be held from Friday, March 28, to Sunday, March 30, at the Hong Kong Stadium.

White backs Coetzee as coach

Ruan Pienaar at flyhalf and Frans Steyn at fullback. That is where these gifted Springboks' future lies in test rugby.
That was the opinion expressed on Tuesday by retiring Bok coach Jake White at the official launch of his autobiography, "In Black and White."
"If I had to start another four-year cycle with this team (the Boks) I would select Ruan at flyhalf and Frans at fullback," said White.
"I know a lot of people say Frans should be groomed as a flyhalf, but the problem is that he is very tall and so he takes too long to offload the ball with his line kicks.
"In comparison, Ruan kicks better with both feet. What I would do is swop Frans and Ruan around on defence. It helps enormously if you have a player weighing 105 kg (Steyn) to defend in the flyhalf channel."
Another reason White foresees a bright future for Steyn in the No 15 jersey is the new rules, which will have a great impact on the game in the near future.
"One of the new rules possibly to come into effect is that a team may no longer kick the ball directly into touch after receiving it from a kick-off.
LONG-RANGE DROP KICKS
"That means many opportunities will come up on the halfway line for long-range drop kicks, and that is where Frans could play a big part."
White says a Bok backline with Fourie du Preez (scrumhalf), Pienaar (flyhalf), Jean de Villiers and Jaque Fourie (centres), Bryan Habana and JP Pietersen (wings) and Steyn at fullback should play together in the next four years.
Regarding his successor, White said it would pay SA Rugby to appoint Allister Coetzee (White's backline coach in the past four years) as the new Bok coach.
"For the sake of continuity that would be the best decision. SA Rugby has invested a lot of money in Allister's development as a coach in the past decade.
"He's already coached the under-23s and the SA A team, and the time has now arrived to give him the senior post.
"What I would suggest is that Allister should be surrounded by a strong coaching team. People like Heyneke Meyer, Dick Muir and Rassie Erasmus could add a lot to Springbok rugby.
"It only makes sense to have as many experienced coaches as possible at the helm. Just look at New Zealand. In Graham Henry, Steve Hansen and Wayne Smith they had three international coaches leading the team.
NOTHING TO BE SNEEZED AT
"I know they lost in the World Cup tournament, but a record of 42 wins in 47 tests is certainly nothing to be sneezed at either."
Concerning his own future, White emphasised that he does not intend coaching in South Africa again.
"I've won the under-21 world title and the senior world cup. I think I've achieved what I could here and won't be able to coach at a lower level again.
"I'm not considering any overseas offers at the moment either, but nor am I saying that I'll never coach again."
White says it won't be a matter of betrayal if he should coach a side against the Boks sometime in the future.
"Look at Nick Mallett. He's now coaching Italy and they are due to play here next year. And Eddie Jones didn't think he would ever help coach South Africa. But it's the age of professionalism and these things will happen increasingly."

Boks need 12-weeks' rest

A compulsory ten-week rest period between rugby seasons is not ideal but it is, at least, a step in the right direction.
That is the response of the South African Rugby Players Association (Sarpa) to the prescribed break that the International Rugby Board announced at the weekend.
Piet Heymans, Sarpa's chief executive, said on Monday the minimum rest period was nearer to what was scientifically regarded as an ideal break between seasons.
"People such as Prof Tim Noakes (one of South Africa's leading sports scientists) feel players should be given twelve weeks' rest," Heymans said.
"That they are now given ten weeks, is a step in the right direction. It is clear that the IRB and the broadcasters have taken note of the well-being of the players."
Heymans believes the break that the Springboks enjoyed at the end of last year paid dividends this year, particularly in the World Cup tournament.
"We saw the results of the decision not to send some of the senior Springboks on the end-of-the-year tour. It certainly favoured the Springboks.
"It also proved it is not only the rest that matters, but when you rest.
"As part of their conditioning programme, some of the senior Springboks did not tour last year and were given another break during this year's Tri-Nations competition.
"It worked for the Springboks but it was different with New Zealand's conditioning programme. New Zealand made a strategic mistake," Heymans said.
In an equally controversial move, the New Zealanders put their 22 best players through a conditioning programme during the first seven weeks of the Super 14 competition.
The All Blacks won the Tri-Nations title but some of their senior players did not come up to expectations and the favourites lost to France in the World Cup quarterfinals.
"It's not only about the duration of the rest period but when you are exposed to it," Heymans said.

Wilkinson on song in Falcons win

Jonny Wilkinson grabbed 19 points as Newcastle eased to a 39-0 victory over Connacht in the European Challenge Cup.
The England fly-half scored the Falcons's fifth and final try, as well as four conversions and two penalties to avenge last week's 16-13 defeat.
Leeds's miserable season continued as they went down to a 27-26 defeat to Calvisano in Italy.
Although they scored more tries than their Italian opponents, indicipline in their own half cost Leeds the win.
Bath marched to their fourth straight victory in the competition on Saturday as they trounced Albi 59-15 in France.
The win puts them in control of Pool One after they notched seven tries at the Recreation Ground with Shaun Berne and Olly Barkley both scoring twice.
Former All Blacks wing Rico Gear grabbed four tries as Worcester crushed Rugby Parma 66-16 in Italy.
The Warriors were 29-9 up at the break and Marcel Garvey completed a brace of tries in a one-sided second half.
Youngsters Chris Pennell and Mike Benjamin weighed in with late tries as their side repeated last weekend's 50-point win over their Italian opponents.

NZRU congratulates Robbie Deans on appointment

The New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) today congratulated Crusaders coach Robbie Deans on his appointment to the position of Wallabies coach and confirmed that he will remain as coach of the Crusaders for the 2008 Rebel Sport Super 14. NZRU CEO Chris Moller said while it was disappointing to lose a coach of Robbie’s calibre to another country, the NZRU Board and Management understood his desire to coach at the international level. “In an ideal world, we would be able to retain all of our top coaches in this country but we have seen over a number of years that the depth and talent of coaching in this country means we can’t keep all of them coaching in New Zealand and still meet their aspirations for higher coaching opportunities,” he said. “Robbie has made a substantial contribution to New Zealand, Crusaders and Canterbury rugby as a player, manager and coach over a long period of time. We believe it is only fair that he be given this opportunity, despite the obvious concern about losing one of our best coaches to another country’s national side.” The Board of the NZRU, at its meeting on Wednesday, decided that in the event he was successful in his application to the Australian Rugby Union, Robbie Deans would be allowed to remain as coach of the Crusaders in 2008, subject to a number of protocols being agreed and the resolution of contractual terms. “We will work through a process with the Crusaders and with Robbie and his management to ensure those protocols, which are intended to protect the interests of New Zealand rugby, are understood and agreed,” said Mr Moller. Crusaders Chairman Murray Ellis said the Crusaders were pleased with the outcome, which is the result of a lot of hard work from all parties to reach an understanding that works for everyone.Crusaders CEO Hamish Riach said the Crusaders were saddened to be losing Robbie Deans from their environment given all of his years of service and the incredible list of achievements he has helped deliver to the Crusaders. “There’s no doubt we would want Robbie to continue coaching here with the Crusaders beyond 2008. But we appreciate that he wants to grow and develop as a coach, particularly at the international level. We wish him and his family the very best in Australia.”

Tight start to Asia Juniors

The 2007 ARFU (Asia) Junior Championship kicked off last night in Brunei with Hong Kong scoring a confidence-boosting win in their bid to beat five other teams to the region’s spot at the inaugural IRB Junior World Trophy in Chile next April.
Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Korea and Sri Lanka are contesting the Junior Cup competition - the winners will join host nation Chile, Uruguay, Jamaica, Namibia, Georgia and Romania at the eight-team IRB Junior World Trophy - while six others - hosts Brunei, Chinese Taipei, India, Laos, the Philippines and the Arabian Gulf - are contesting the Junior Trophy, the winner of which will be promoted to next year’s Cup competition.
The tournament, which runs until 22 December, does not feature Japan as they are already confirmed as Asia’s representatives at the IRB Junior World Championship in Wales in June 2008 - the top tier of the new Under 20 competitions.
Sri Lanka 12-6 Thailand
On day one Thailand were unlucky not to cause the first upset of the tournament when they lost dramatically to Sri Lanka in the final minutes.
Leading 6-0, Thailand’s impressive defence had fended off Sri Lanka’s best efforts, centres Sirihai Daothawong and Myawatt Chunkoh outstanding in their tackling against the larger opposition. However, in the final throes of the match Sri Lankan Bilal Hassen barged over to put his side back in the match and the successful conversion by Harsha Weerakkool put them in front for the first time.
In their attempt to regain the lead, Thailand turned the ball over in the final passage of play and Gayan Weerarathe scampered down the touch line to score.
Korea 27-12 Singapore
One of the pre-tournament favourites Korea confirmed their status with a comfortable win other a determined Singapore side.
Korea rushed to a 22-point lead in the first half with Singapore struggling to contain the deceptive runners In Kyu Kim and Dae Kyu Lim, who both scored a brace of tries. Singapore finished the stronger of the teams scoring twice in the second half.
Hong Kong 14-0 Malaysia
In the clash of the top two seeds Hong Kong won a scrappy game against Malaysia. Both sides struggled to maintain their discipline and will be looking for stronger performances in the semi finals, Hong Kong largely reliant on the steady kicking of Gavin Hadley, who landed three penalties.
The next round of matches in the Asian Cup are the semi finals featuring Malaysia against Korea and Hong Kong against Sri Lanka.
Two matches are to be played on Saturday 15 December in the Asian Trophy, Chinese Taipei taking on the Arabian Gulf and hosts Brunei playing against India.

Chile trip the prize at stake in Brunei

The Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) Junior Championship kicks off in Brunei on Friday with six teams hoping to claim the region’s spot at the inaugural IRB Junior World Trophy in Chile next April.
Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Korea and Sri Lanka will meet in the Junior Cup competition, with the winner to join host nation Chile, Uruguay, Jamaica, Namibia, Georgia and Romania at the eight-team IRB Junior World Trophy.
Six others - hosts Brunei, Chinese Taipei, India, Laos, the Philippines and the Arabian Gulf - will contest the Junior Trophy with the winner promoted to the Cup competition for next year’s ARFU Junior Championship.
The tournament, which runs until 22 December, does not feature Japan as they are already confirmed as Asia’s representatives at the IRB Junior World Championship in Wales in June 2008 - the top tier of the new Under 20 competitions.
Hong Kong are one side taking part and coach Ivan Torpey knows that they need to hit the ground running against Malaysia if they are to better their third place finish last year and realise their goal of qualifying for the IRB Junior World Trophy.
“This is not a game taken lightly. The players will have to be on top form to achieve the right result. The team has been making progress and is definitely moving in the right direction,” Torpey said.
In the other opening matches in the Junior Cup, Singapore face Korea and Sri Lanka meet Thailand. The action then continues on Monday, 17 December and Thursday, 20 December.
